Capella Kyoto is located in Miyagawa-cho, one of Kyoto’s historic geisha districts. Reinterpreting the refined aesthetics of machiya townhouses, narrow alleyways, and traditional kagai culture in a contemporary way, the design creates a spatial experience characterized by depth, tranquility, and a strong sense of place unique to Kyoto.
Built on the former site of Shinmichi Elementary School, long cherished by the local community, the development was realized in coordination with the adjacent Miyagawa-cho Kaburenjo Theatre. The project preserves the memory of a former place of learning while establishing a new destination for experiencing the history and culture of Miyagawa-cho.
We were responsible for the total management of FFE and OSE. Elements preserving the memory of the site, including the restoration of original lighting fixtures, were incorporated alongside materials and techniques rooted in Kyoto’s cultural heritage. Locally associated materials and crafts were integrated throughout the interiors and guestroom amenities, creating a guest experience that reflects the cultural identity of Kyoto.
Value engineering proposals were also implemented to balance authenticity with budget requirements while maintaining quality standards, contributing to the optimization of the overall procurement process. -
